Invisalign – invisible braces are a great alternative to traditional orthodontic appliances.
Post by Genevieve De Guzman, senior dental assistant
One of the more popular treatment options we offer patients at Greenwood Dental is Invisalign. Invisalign is an invisible way of straightening teeth without using braces or metals. Instead we use a series of custom-made aligners, which are a little like thin mouthguards. These are a really good alternative for traditional orthodontics like braces.
Of course, if you prefer traditional orthodontics you can get them. But there are advantages with Invisalign. Firstly, it’s nearly invisible; no one notice it that you’re using it. While it’s functioning and correcting and straightening your teeth without anyone knowing it, so you can use it at work and at home. It’s very convenient.
Secondly, unlike braces, the Invisalign aligners are removable and it’s comfortable, and it allows you to view your own dental treatment before you start.
While you’re wearing braces, which are metal, they are always there and very clearly visible to everyone. When you smile, when you take photos, it sparks and it shines out in the photo. But when you’re wearing Invisalign, you can wear it anywhere. You can wear it in your meetings. You can wear it in the office and you just take it out when you eat, for example. It’s far more comfortable than traditional braces as well. It’s like just a clear tray. When you look at it closely, it looks like a whitening tray.
When you’re wearing traditional braces you need special gadgets, for example, to clean your teeth. You need orthodontic toothbrush. Also, it’s very hard to floss. Maintenance-wise, Invisalign is easy to maintain. You take the tray out when you eat and drink.
With my experience with our patients, they’re really very good at using the Invisalign tray. We have a period of follow-up to when the treatment when it’s finished, so we get to see there that our patients are very disciplined in maintaining the treatment regime. Also, our dentists explain well, even before we start, the maintenance and how to wear it. If patients are really determined for their teeth to be corrected, or straightened, then they’re really willing to wear it, day in and day out.
