What is a Cone Beam?

At Greenwood Dental we use state-of-the-art Cone Beam technology when planning your dental implants

One of the bits of technology we use when treating patients who need dental implants is Cone Beam computed tomography, also known as Cone Beam. You may have heard of it. It’s a type of medical X-ray imaging, but a bit different to the X-rays you would be used to.

The use of a Cone Beam is for diagnosis, not the actual treatment. The radiation dose from a cone beam is very low, but the information the dentist can get from it is really valuable. The experience is different from normal dental X-rays, where you may sit in the chair and have the dentist place a scanner beside your cheek. For starters, it requires standing up in front of this large machine which then slowly moves around your head while you stay still. By doing that it takes a full X-ray in much greater detail than we can get with other X-rays.

Not all dentists would use cone beam scanners, but here at Greenwood Dental we are quite particular about it, especially when we’re planning dental implants. Our dentists insist on a cone beam scan before a dental implant before proceeding to treatment. The dentist will check the bone from the cone beam result, and also check carefully the nerves running through where the implant is going to be inserted.

The dentists will also use the results of the scan to explain what will be involved in their treatment, and what he’s looking for on the X-ray. It’s a good thing for the patient to understand what he’ll be going through so he could follow religiously all the instructions the dentist is going give, because the more the patient understands the process, the more they can actively participate in getting back to optimum health.
