Dental sedation options

From happy gas to sleep dentistry, we have all sedation options covered.

Greenwood Dental offers the full spectrum of dental sedation options for patients. On the mildest end, if patients ask for it, also we offer “happy gas” or nitrous oxide. We have it in the surgery and the dentist gives it to patients who are anxious, who prefer a lighter type of sedative. If you are an anxious or nervous patient, we give the happy gas or the nitrous oxide. If for some reason you can’t use nitrous oxide, we also have Penthrox, which could be inhaled. It’s just like a pump that can be inhaled and works instantly. The effects of the Penthrox lasts just for the duration of the treatment.

At the other end of the spectrum we offer sleep dentistry. Our anaesthetist comes in every fortnight, and we schedule patients at that time if their procedure requires his services.

Sleep dentistry involves putting a patient to sleep and relaxes the patient without them having any recollection of the treatment. This is really applicable for the nervous and anxious patient, because it takes the trauma out of a dental visit. It’s an extra cost on top of the dental procedure, but would certainly take care of any fears the patient may have. This would relax and would put the patient in a very comfortable sedating procedure, and securely it’s good to know that there is an anaesthetist that would come to monitor and do the sedating process.
It’s not the dentist doing it because he’s more focused on your teeth. For example, if we’re doing implants or wisdom teeth extraction, these are surgical extractions. So the dentist would prefer to just focus on the dental procedure. When there’s an anaesthetist focusing on the patient’s blood pressure, the pulse rate, the heart rate, the breathing rate of the patient, it makes it a lot easier for everyone involved.
